For my second adaptive assessment, I completed an adult medical-surgical assessment. For the pharmacology assessment my questions stopped at around 90 questions. For this assessment I completed 230 questions. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. I kept thinking that the assessment was going to shut off and it seemed like it never did. I found myself getting frustrated because I felt like I was getting a lot of questions correct. This is when I should have known to take a break. 230 questions is a lot in one sitting and I should be taking breaks while I have that opportunity.

Overall I actually did fairly well on the assessment but I think I could have done better if I had taken breaks. Next time, I want to implement a break requirement for every 50-75 questions. This way if the assessment doesn’t stop when I expect it to, I have a plan in place to not get frustrated or overwhelmed. While the amount of questions did make me anxious, I think I improved a little in terms of not taking too long or too short of a time for each question. Its important to think questions through but its also important not to overthink them. My average time for each question was one minute and seventeen seconds, I think that is reasonable.

  1. Yes, taking breaks to stretch, breathe, and clear your head is a good thing! Try to notice things like losing concentration, feeling distracted or restless, or answering a lot of questions that seem easier or on the same topics – that will be your signal to take a break, rather than automatically breaking at specific intervals (which may or may not be beneficial).
